Management of cachexia - Archived

Cachexia is a condition associated with decrease in appetite with associated increase in metabolism of fat and lead body mass.  It leads to damage to skeletal muscle (pale fibres more affected than red) causing profound lethargy and fatigue.  There is major weight loss with associated alteration of body image, which can be very distressing to the child and family.

Please contact the paediatric palliative care team for specialist advice about managing cachexia.
